With the January bridal wedding show season just a week away I got thinking… why do so many people get engaged between Christmas and New Years? Just monitor your friends Facebook statuses and I’m sure you’ll stumble upon at least one “friend” who just couldn’t wait to change their relationship status from “In a Relationship” to “Engaged” probably before they told their parents!
In my research for this blog I couldn’t find much on the topic. There is tons of info on how many people get married and when they get get married. But there is really no way to know when people get engaged because engaged people don’t have to fill anything out or sign a contract. What I did find out is the most popular times to pop the question. Here they are in order of popularity:
- Valentines Day – The big one… a bit obvious and in my opinion a little to predictable and lacking in originality
- Christmas Day – a great time because it saves you having to call all your family and friends to tell them. Makes a pretty good Christmas gift and you’re guaranteed to never forget when you got engaged..lol. Plus, how could she say no with all your family and friends there. Note: could be a challenge if you’re from different faiths.
- New Years – another pretty fun and unforgettable time to slide a ring on that special person. New Years Eve always has such a build up and a lot of times ends up being a lunch-bag let down. Popping the question could take it to a new level. Just be sure that you don’t party it up too much and mess everything up… that would make it memorable for all the wrong reasons.
- Anniversary of the first date – this is a good one and special because it is all about you and your spouse to be. Guys, make sure you have the right date. Don’t mix it up with her birthday or your ex’s dogs birthday… yikes!
- Girlfriends Birthday – this is still really popular. I don’t see it. Why would a girl want what was up till then her big day in the sun, be trumped by her engagement. Come on guys don’t be cheap and try to get away with not having to buy a birthday gift. You can be a little more creative and let her keep her birthday!
- Any day that works- so I guess all the other engagements fall under this category. Somehow over time couples having instinctively known when the time was right… well most of us… and did it whenever the moment was right!
This leads me back to my original question, why DO so many people get engaged over the holidays? There is probably no right or wrong answer to this question but I do have a theory. I’ve been producing wedding shows for over a decade and hands down the busiest shows are always in January. So my theory is that guys getting engaged over the holiday season and Valentines are just guys being typical guys. Think about it… your average guy is fairly practical, likes to take path of least resistance, is not overly creative, likes the team approach and is know to take any short-cut available to him!
So girls don’t take it personally or get all poopy if your guy doesn’t do something spectacular and creative. He’s just being a typical guy and loves you no less then those big show off guys who’ll fly you off to Paris on the anniversary of your first kiss, take you to the top of the Eiffel Tower, sing a song he wrote for you, get down on one knee and recite a poem he wrote professing his undying love and adoremation, then in sync with the preplanned fireworks ask for your hand in marriage…. blaa blaa blaa…. Think about all the money your guy saved by popping the question in the car on the way to his parents Christmas party…. that’s like a down payment on your first home!!!
